  • Black and white all day err'day!
.
Happy Saturday, my friends. It's a gorgeous day in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I'm contemplating whether I can leave it all behind.
.
Answer: Maybe.
.
But whatever. It's been too long since I've gone on a photowalk. Where shall I wander today? Tomorrow?

  • It's been a long week. When Tuesday evening rolled around I was convinced in my head that it was Friday. As I crawled into bed each night, I felt pummeled and battered and exhausted.
.
Much like these rocks must feel as the relentless waves leap and crash.
.
I'm still grinding away, and it's unclear if I'm the waves or the rocks. Either way, it doesn't stop, and late night music and hot tea accompany me.
.
But we had good news today. And that has been pretty wonderful.
.
35mm film photo of Land's End, San Francisco, CA. Can you see the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge?

  • It's been half a month since I last posted here. Not sure what to say about how I've spent the time between then and now. Traveling, yes (follow my Story for updates on my day to day when I travel). But, more than that- I have been reading.
.
Since I was a child and well into my young adulthood, my mother made it a habit to take us to the library weekly to bring back sacks full of books. My brother (<a href=/user/puchipochi/1>@puchipochi</a>) and I couldn't get enough. I only stopped reading towards the end of high school because of mounting pressures from school, athletics, music, and too many other extracurriculars (surprisingly, we don't have a tiger mother; we were just raised in a community filled with other people's tiger mothers, whose influence usually rubbed off on our parents in the way of summer camps and myriad activities on the weekends).
.
But, really, the main problem was that, once I got into a book, I was hooked. It's like an addiction- breathless, thoughtless, and heedless to the necessities of life. I would stay up late to plow through a book. The second day always hurt.
.
And so I stopped reading. A book here, a book there. Afraid to truly dive in.
.
And, really, I thought I'd improve with age; I would turn into a lounging adult, casually reading books as they crossed my way, embracing stacks of literature that were mind numbing and not particularly intellectually stimulating.
.
Now, I've learned a few things: (1) Almost all books are interesting in their own ways, and (2) I'm way, way worse now.
.
Now, with no parents to mind me and tell me to sleep, and with the funds of an adult who travels and needs companionship (hello, Kindle!), I devour not just books-- but series of books. For some authors, everything they have written are stored in my Kindle. I find myself ridiculous.
.
But it's wonderful. I'm so glad to have rediscovered this love of reading, even if it's eaten up all of my spare time....
.

  • ... and I'm back.
.
Colombia was fun. I've got a ton of rolls waiting to be dropped off and developed and a bunch of memories waiting to be divulged.
.
(Thinking of developed film = *happiness ensues*)
.
Bummed to have left Cartagena, but happy to be home. Traveling as much as I do for work, I don't feel as an acute a pain when it's time to return home from an extended trip. After all, I'll be on the road again soon. On the other hand, traveling for fun (with those you care about- and to celebrate those you care about) is tremendously different from traveling for work.
.
But now I'm home, and work is looming over my head, and I'm ready to fly back to my vacation.
.
The bittersweetness of travel strikes again.

  • Celebrating #DebbyandSamir in Cartagena has been a blast! They told me the party needed to end 'early' because of noise restrictions. So they had to end at 3am...
.
😳
.
[I barely made it, but ended up being a trooper and hanging on (desperately) till the end!]
.
Cartagena has been a dream. The colors of the old city are fantastic, and I'm refreshing my high school Spanish skills.
.
By the way- since I'm loathe to post non-film photos, you can follow along on my Colombian adventures in my IG Story above! 😜🇨🇴

So, of course, that means laundry, picking up (and dropping off) film, and packing. And looking at photos from my trip to Malaysia last October. Right.

  • Went home for the briefest of freezing seconds this past weekend to celebrate my parents' birthdays. It was over so soon! A few things: I love Maryland, but MAN was it cold! I'm also somewhat embarrassed to say that I escaped the mid-/upper-20s degree weather (and the blizzard today) and am currently looking forward to a balmy mid-70s day.😬

  • Part of the point of going black and white with my photography was so I could focus on the nuances of light without becoming distracted with color. But I feel like I've been staring at the world of color and trying to smush it into black and white. It doesn't quite work that way, and some of my photos feel awkward to me. Composition! Light! Perspective!
.
Let's start thinking about this all over again.

Time to go on more 📷shoots and more 📷walks. Y'all in?

  • Because my mama is the epitome of an international woman and someone I've always looked up to as a woman and as a human being. She has managed to successfully raise three (pretty awesome) kids in a foreign country (starting in rural Alabama no less), picked up the local language (she can now watch British tv shows without subtitles- quite a feat; I can barely claim the same), and she is more well read than most of the people I know. She's compassionate and passionate. She recently almost got into a serious fight because of Trump, and she has strong convictions and opinions and isn't afraid to voice them. She never went full Tiger Mom on us, but she could be pretty severe when we needed to practice violin or piano or had homework to do! And yet somehow she continues to be the adorable mother I've always known her to be.
.
Love you, mama!

  • There's nothing like a beautiful bar area that makes you want to drink at 9:12 a.m. on a Saturday morning.
.
I didn't indulge, but plenty around me were. Morning mimosa, amirite? (Also, I was recently appalled to discover that 'amirite' is now in the Oxford Dictionary. So, naturally, I must now attempt to work it into all aspects of my life.)
.

  • I slept a lot this weekend. A lot. Between strangely severe allergies and several migraines (plus, I suspect that I have been sick on top of this), I spent the majority of Sunday sleeping (and Saturday wishing I were sleeping). No bueno.
.
I'm feeling better now, but still rather weaksauce if I'm completely frank.
.
And I'm more than a bit bummed that my weekend was spent convalescing. On the other hand, it was raining and hailing today. So I would not have gotten much time outside anyway.
.
Thus, you may not be surprised to hear that this photo was not taken this weekend. That, and, well, it's film so who're we kidding - I'm not blessed with a two day turnaround time for film development. But that's one of the allures of film, so I'm okay with that!
.
So this was shot on black and white 35mm film at Sutro Baths when <a href=/user/igerssf/1>@igerssf</a> had their photowalk the other day.

Made my way out to SF for a photowalk with <a href=/user/igerssf/1>@igerssf</a> recently to check out Sutro Baths and Land's End. I'm usually too shy to really be able to talk to anyone at these massive gatherings, so I just look on and snap, snap, snap away.

  • The perks of having a bestie who's a calligrapher/artist = 💌!!! Snail mail from <a href=/user/yourstrulycalligraphy/1>@yourstrulycalligraphy</a> is the best! 😍
.
Of course, now whenever I send any mail to anyone I'm completely embarrassed by my own handwriting...😅
.
35mm black and white film photo; Feb 2017. Slight light leak, and its always hard to capture paper on film. Working on it, though. If you go back a few posts in her feed, you'll see her photo of this awesome vellum, paper, twine, and ink mail (and in color).☺️

@jeanneyangphotography oh gosh, I'm having pregnancy brain and can't remember right now. Anyway, I love all these former-attorney-cum-____ stories!

  • Those of you who've followed me on IG for a while have met #skylartheponyo, my niece in various posts.
.
Earlier this month, we went over to my cousin's for Chinese New Year and Skylar taught us how to make dumplings just like she made at school.
.
Oh, but she's always ready to ham it up for the camera.
.
35mm film photo of Skylar from a few weeks back. Got my film scans back from <a href=/user/photoworkssf/1>@photoworkssf</a> today! Wahoo!! In any case, happy (super belated) lunar new year, everyone!

  • When I was young, I was drawn to dark poetry, deep thoughts, and mysterious things. It was that age when your body doesn't fit right and nothing seems to work in your favor and the world is out to get you.
.
Back then, I would have been drawn to the quiet darkness and shadows of this alleyway. My thoughts would be skittering over one another in a chaotic frenzy, each fighting to shine brightest before receding to the depths of my mind.
.
I wrote a lot then. I wrote everywhere. In my journals, on my computer, on the internet. The world was my oyster, and, by god, I was going to leave a bit of gritty sand everywhere I could reach. One day, I hoped, those thoughts might coalesce into a book. Or a small collection of inane thoughts.
.
They still might.
.
But I've grown up since then. My focus is on my career, putting down the foundations for myself and my future. There is barely time to breathe, much less explore the creative side of myself, which, at this point, is dusty and cobwebby and kind of gross to look at.
.
Maybe next time I'll explore the alleyway.

  • Hurtling onward. How is it that the days fly by and my to-do list only grows longer and never shrinks? Like the lengthening of shadows of warm summer evenings, my list grows ever longer. Soon, I shall be enveloped in darkness! And I feel antsy because I can never keep up.
.
Ah. 'Tis my life.
.
In other news, it rained some more today. I'd like a day of beauteous sunshine so I can go on a warm hike and take pretty photos, please!
.
On the other hand, weather like this is totally conducive to black and white photography. 🤔
.
35mm black and white film photo taken in the dawn hours after the boy's school holiday party. Confession? I totally forgot it was black and white film sitting in my camera and was hoping to get some fabulously pink sunrises on film. 😛... that didn't work. On the other hand, Yerba Buena and the SF MOMA be looking good!

Black and white all day err'day! . Happy Saturday, my friends. It's a gorgeous day in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I'm contemplating whether I can leave it all behind. . Answer: Maybe. . But whatever. It's been too long since I've gone on a photowalk. Where shall I wander today? Tomorrow? . 35mm black and white film photo of the Sutro Baths in San Francisco from an @igerssf photowalk months ago.
