  • Japanese food is what I cook from day to day but I usually end up cooking the same things using the same recipes in rotation. one of my goals for this year is to incorporate different things into my Japanese food rotation by cooking through cookbooks. first on my list is a bento cookbook by Ms. Chinatsu Doi (the rice balls I posted a while ago were from her cookbook too), which has lots of simple and straightforward recipes — some basic, some with a twist. I tried her recipe for hosomaki, a type of sushi roll, and rolled sushi for the first time ever. it's nourishing for the mind, body and soul to learn more about the food of your own culture, and I hope I will be able to complete this project.   • pork and vegetable miso soup (or tonjiru) with crab meat rice balls. whenever I make tonjiru, I always think of gaijin miso soup (which translates to foreigner miso soup) which my friend Scott invented and named. it's his version of miso soup with additions of all kinds of vegetables that you normally wouldn't find in a traditional version, like broccoli or zucchini. tonjiru is sort of like gaijin miso soup; there are the basic root vegetables you use but it's ok to improvise.   • of all the baking/cooking process shots, meringue involved ones are my favorite.
2016 was all about the process for me. it was a year that constantly reminded me to stop focusing on the results and to enjoy the process. to stop concentrating on what's ahead and to be more in the moment and to treasure the present. to understand that the process is where we learn and grow the most, that it may be a path that swerves and leads you to take the long way, but that it will lead you to wherever you are headed (and other unexpected places) and when you get there and look back, that path will be just as (if not more) cherished as the place you've reached. I am still learning and have to keep reminding myself, but hope that by continuing to do so in the new year this concept will stick. 2016 was also the year I took up baking/photography again and came back to instagram. I'm so glad I did because I have been able to connect with so many lovely people I never would have if not for this app, and have been so inspired by all of the beautiful photographs here. I wish you all happiness in the last moments of 2016 and here's to a bright and beautiful (and delicious) 2017✨  <a  href=/tag/cheers>#cheers</a>  <a  href=/tag/happynewyear>#happynewyear</a>
